Are you interested in playing with the Bury St Edmunds Concert Band?
If you are comfortable playing at a grade 4 (ABRSM) level, you should be able to perform most of our extensive repertoire. We ask that you have at least grade 5, but we rate practical ability with your chosen instrument above purely academic qualifications.
We ask our members to regularly attend rehearsals, which are held from 19.30 every Monday evening (not Bank Holidays) at Sybil Andrews Academy in Bury St Edmunds. During school holidays, alternative venues are used. We also encourage members to practise their more difficult parts at home, so that they are fully prepared when rehearsing with the full band. Musicians are expected to make every effort to be available for all of our public performances.
All musicians are required to bring their own instruments and to keep them properly maintained to a high standard. Members’ subscriptions of £10 are collected every 8 weeks. Players considering joining the band may attend their first 2 or 3 rehearsals without commitment before formally joining us, in order for them to decide that they would like to do so.
Musicians are required to provide their own uniforms. For our formal concerts, the Ladies wear black dress, shoes, and accessories, whilst the Gentlemen of the Band wear black suit (Dinner Jacket preferred) with black shoes and white shirt, finished off with a maroon bow tie which is provided by the Band. Informal summer open-air concerts see all players with white shirt/blouse, black trousers and shoes. A black shell jacket, embroidered with the Band’s name, is available through the Band at a discounted price for use at outdoor concerts when the weather is cooler.
We are currently seeking to strengthen several sections of the Band and so presently have vacancies for players of the following instruments (updated 10/05/18):
- Tenor saxophone
- Horn/French Horn (Eb or F)
- Tuba * (Bb, C, or Eb, reading Bass clef or Treble clef)
*If you are a Tuba player without an instrument, we can provide you with one on loan.
Do you play an instrument not on the above list? Contact us anyway, and we’ll keep your details on file and you’ll hear from us when a suitable vacancy arises.
